Poraka Puoro

Poraka Puoro is a musical instrument made out of wood, in the form of a turtle. When you rub a stick, located in the mouth of the wooden turtle,  against its back, you can create magical sounds. The instrument is used in traditional ceremonies.

The Poraka Puoro is made of Rakau Mate, which is Whenuan for magical tree. Rakau Mate is harvested from ancient old trees, that are only found on the north side of Whenua. The wood can only be used when the trees die from natural cause. When the craftsmen are finished with the sculping of the Poraka Puoro, the Tangata Mahara blesses the Poraka Puoro. This a spiritual person gives these musical instruments a magical touch.

We work with a Puoro certificate. This certificate certifies that the instrument you buy is made of Rakau Mate and is blessed by the Tangata Mahara. This way we prevent our buyers from getting scammed.

The Poraka Puoro is made of Rakau Mate, which is Whenuan for magical tree. Rakau Mate is harvested from ancient old trees, that are only found on the north side of Whenua. Only when the Rakau Mate trees die from natural causes can the wood be used for the Poraka Puoro. Since the Whenuan people believe that the Rakau Mate trees are magical, nobody is allowed to cut them down but the Tangata Mahara. The Tangata Mahara is a spiritual person who carefully harvests the wood and blesses the Poraka Puoro when the craftsmen are finished. In this way all the Poraka Puoros in the country can be used as instruments during the traditional festivity.
