Tokotoko Ika
Tokotoko Ika is a product used by the people of Whenua who live in Wakah. If we translate “tokotoko ika” to English, we will get “fish stick”. These “fish sticks” or simply fishing rods are made from one of the strongest wood available in the world. The handles of the rods are also made of the wood but are also finished with rubber from the Rubber Whenuan Tree. This results into that the rubber on the wooden handle will make it more comfortable when used.
The wooden base of the rods is finished with metal. The metal will enforce the base of the rods and turn it into a more reliable tool. The craftsmen who make these rods are very skilled and learned the skills from their dad. The techniques haven’t changed much.
People are also free to customize their fishing rod. On every fishing rod we will see the regional symbol engraved into the handle. Besides the regional symbol are the people free to get a name, family symbol, a god symbol, … When using these fishing rods they will feel more connected with their “tokotoko ika”
